Naji Hakim
EXPRESSIONS

When Jean Langlais received a commision for a book of short pieces for organ, he chose to share the collection with his former pupil, Naji Hakim. The result is an outstanding assortment of miniatures, in the spirit of Vierne's Pièces en style libre. In these pieces, Hakim mixes the immortality of Gregorian chant with quotations from Langlais and Stravinsky, and classical forms with modern harmonizations. Plainsong is used in numbers 16 (Gregorian Alleluia), 17 (Adore te devote), 20 (Crux fidelis) and 21 (Ego dormivi). Devices and forms include canon at the octave between the outer voices. Number 23 uses material from Hakim's Symphonie en Trois Mouvements (II). Langlais' themes are heard in number 28 (Prelude Modal in duet with the melody of the Berceuse from Stravinsky's Firebird) and 30 (Suite Francaise, Prélude). The lucid transparency and the overall intimate quality of these selections provide a stark contrast to the larger works heard on this disc.
